Sodium nitrite is white to slightly yellow crystal, odourless, slightly salty, easily deliquescent, easily soluble in water, melting point is 271℃, decomposition temperature is 320℃, oxidative and reductive. Toxic. It will slowly oxidise into sodium nitrate in the air, and easily form diazo compounds with amino groups at low temperature.
Uses:
Sodium nitrite in the industrial field can be used as fabric dyeing mordant, silk, linen bleaching agent, metal heat treatment agent, electroplating corrosion inhibitor.
In the chemical field, Sodium nitrite can be used as chemical analysis reagents.
In the field of medicine, it can be used as vasodilator, antidote for cyanide poisoning.
In the experimental field, it can be used as analytical reagent, and also used as concrete early strength agent and antifreeze agent.
Sodium nitrite also can be used as raw material for making potassium nitrite, nitro compounds, azo dyes and so on.
Storage and transportation: Sodium nitrite should be placed in a low-temperature, dry, ventilated warehouse. Doors and windows should be tightly closed to prevent direct sunlight. It can be stored with other nitrates other than ammonium nitrate, but it should be stored in isolation from organic materials, flammable materials and reducing agents, and isolated from fire source.
